Meekyung MacMurdie is a PhD candidate at the University of Chicago where she specializes in pre-modern Islamic art. Her interests include: artistic practices of ornament and design, the transmission of knowledge and cross-cultural exchange, and the historiography of Islamic art. Her dissertation, Geometric Medicine: aniconism and Arab painting locates geometric schema as the meeting ground between the sciences and arts, as a dialogue that spanned strata of makers in the medieval Islamic world.
As part of the Global Horizons team, Meekyung focuses on the relationship between cosmology, medicine, and cartography in Arabic intellectual thought and artistic practice. Exploring the boundaries between text, table, diagram, ornament, and picture, this project aims to describe historical ontologies of representation in the medieval Islamic arts of the book.
